Tom Herman would be a perfect fit, and no I’m not drunk (for the moment), so hear me out!
Herman would probably leave his “Special Projects” role with the Bears in a heartbeat for another P5 HC gig.
Herman could probably even steal Major Applewhite away from South Alabama to be his OC. They worked well together at Houston.
Herman and Applewhite have years of experience recruiting in Texas and can use their connections to (hopefully) make Virginia Tech’s recruiting better. One of Justin Fuente’s faults and shortcomings was his inability to recruit in Blacksburg.
And the most important reason to hire Tom Herman — His teams perform better when they’re an underdog, and since Tech has taken on the new role as the underdog, I fully expect Babcock to reach out to Tom Herman.
Herman was 32-18 over four seasons as the head coach of the University of Texas. He was fired back in January after the Longhorns wrapped up a 7-3 season and replaced by Steve Sarkisian.
Herman was the head coach at the University of Houston before heading to Austin and he went 22-4 in two years at the school. He spent three years as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator at Ohio State prior to becoming a head coach and has never worked at the NFL level before.
