An onside kick attempt ended disastrously Thursday evening during an NAIA football game between Jamestown College and Valley City State University. Trailing 24-7 with just more than 7 minutes remaining in the contest, an onside kick attempt by Jamestown resulted in the football being shanked and traveling roughly two yards in the wrong direction from where the ball had been placed prior to the kick.
The score at the time of the blunder would hold as Valley City State prevailed and took home the Paint Bucket Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the matchup between the two rivals. That said, Jamestown’s botched onside kick will likely be what this year’s iteration of the rivalry game will be remembered for.
